  • Awards: The Best of Hereford Business Winner 2008|AA Restaurant Award 2009|
  • Amenities: Non-smoking (throughout); Lounge; BBQ/Picnic area; Bar;
  • Parking: On-site parking;

Description:

Welcome to Orles Barn’s website. We believe this should act as a window to all aspects of what goes on here and therefore rely on the adage, “a picture paints a thousand words.” However as “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”, nothing could replace the experience of staying or dining here without stepping inside this 17th Century barn.

Bedrooms named after apples, homemade biscuits in cookie jars and bedtime hot chocolate topped with mini marshmallows are all part of staying with us. Orles Barn operates like a relaxed country house, run with you in mind whether its for a quiet after-work drink or a celebration of the most special day of your life.

Orles Barn goes back to the 14th century when it was one of a number of farm buildings on this site. The store with bedroom above is the only surviving part of the original structure. Edging the front lawn is a low wall being the remains of a long building in which wooden clogs were once made for local and passing workers.

The Lithe map of 1839 shows Orles Barn to have been part of a large but fragmented farm estate owned by one Mary Platt. King George IV returning to London from Ireland in 1821 was greatly annoyed by a traffic jam in the narrow streets of Ross-on-Wye. A letter of Royal displeasure followed prompting the local towns people to build a by-pass.The barn was converted to provide accommodation in 1960 and further enlarged in 1970 becoming a hotel.

Please Note: We are a No-Smoking property. Stag & Hen nights accepted by prior arrangement. Regrettably, we cannot accept pets only by arrangement. Children welcome. Check-In time: 1400 and Check-Out time: 1100.

The Swan at Hay

The Swan at Hay,
	Hereford,
	Herefordshire

    Quick facts...

  • Parking: On-site parking; Free parking;

Description:

The Swan at Hay is a privately-owned hotel and restaurant in the Marches town of Hay-on-Wye where warm hospitality and good food await you. Standing alongside the glorious river Wye, Hay-on-Wye retains all the charm of a late Georgian, early Victorian market town. With its markets, book shops, boutique-style shops and access to the unrivalled scenery of The Black Mountains and Welsh Marches, Hay-on-Wye is the ideal base for your short break. A fine grade-2 listed Georgian coaching inn, we continue to improve and upgrade The Swan, establishing it as one of the premier hotels in the Welsh Marches. Both the décor of the refurbished rooms and the menus in the dining rooms and bistro reflect the many years the family spent living and working in the South of France.

As the original ‘Town of Books’ and home to the annual book festival in May, this small town on the England-Wales border has now achieved international recognition. However, it is not just for books and the arts that you visit Hay-on-Wye. Situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park, this is an ideal base from which to walk and explore the glorious hills of The Black Mountains. Fishing on the river Wye, canoeing, gliding, long-distance cycling and horse riding are all offered locally.

For the less energetic, the Welsh Marches, the hard fought-for and largely undiscovered border country, is a true gem with ruined Norman castles and rural churches waiting to be discovered. Cross the Gospel Pass into the hidden Hondu Valley where you will find the ruins of Llanthony Priory and the beautifully crooked Cwmyoy church. Alternatively, visit Hereford, a city dominated by the 12th century cathedral, home to both the Mappa Mundi and England’s largest chained library or travel a little further to Ludlow and en route visit Croft Castle and Berrington Hall, two beautiful National Trust properties.
