Description:

Overseale House is a fine George II Grade 2* Country House. It was built around 1760 by Joseph Wilkes of Overseale{1733-1805}. Wilkes was an important 18th centuary industsrialist who tended to be overlooked, but he was an outstanding example of an entrepreneur, who exploited the economic expansion in the second half of the 18th C.
He largely succeeded in achieving, an intigrated group of extractive and manufacturing industries supported by an improving network of services, which included his investment in the Ashby canal system by starting his own Bank, which later became the Midland and then the HSBC. His busines contacts include the Wyatt family, famous architects, which would explain the Paladian design for the house and the 'Wyatt built' mahogany doors used throughout the house with Mathew Boulton's manfactured door knobs.
Later he sold the house to a son in law, a banker, who further beautified it using the building talents of Pickford .Another son in laws' descendent ,became the Archbishop of Canterbury who later crowned Queen Elizabeth 11.
Regular visitors to the house include Mathew Boulton and James Watt plus all five romantic poets. and Josiah Wedgewood. Wilkes was also a 'nodding' aquaintance of King George 111, with whom he shared a passion for animal farming. In Wilkes case he wanted to sell livestock to feed the army. He invented a device which, by flushing, cleaned out the bedding and fertilised the soil. A small model was built in his garden,at present this has not been excavated!
Wilkes also built ships, running a commercial fleet between Burton on Trent and the Baltic countries.
The house suffered from lack of investment throughout the 20thC.This did preserve all of the special features, which allowed the present owners to restore ,mostly, back to the original design, keeping the 1760 windows and the special moldings intact etc.
This house was 'lost' to the nation for a century but is now back and is able to welcome the public.
