Will the Recession Affect Your Travel Plans?
As we are all unavoidably aware,
the global economy is currently in a state of crisis, and the impact of this troubled financial situation
is being felt in every area of our lives. The continuing increase of both unemployment and the cost of
living, coupled with ever-lower interest rates on saving and ever-higher interest rates on credit cards,
mortgages and loans means that money is more scarce than ever before, and households are
feeling the strain of a budget that is tighter than ever before.
As a consequence of the
credit crunch many people are having to tighten their purse strings, and luxuries are often being
sacrificed in order to make sure that there is enough money to pay for all of the essentials. As a
direct result of this, lots of people feel that a holiday, whilst much needed during this stressful
period, is too expensive to be justified when money is low, and thus holidays are either being
cancelled, or not planned in the first place. With some careful planning, however, there is no reason
that people shouldn't enjoy a pleasant vacation, and following are some tips as to how to plan a
holiday during this time of economic crisis.
The first point to take into consideration when
travelling is location, and during the recession there are a number of destinations that make
particularly wise vacation choices. Rather than heading to Italy or the South of France, now is a
good time to explore the delights of Eastern Europe, a much cheaper alternative to traditionally
popular European holiday destinations. Croatia, for example, is known for its wonderful beaches,
and Slovenia is also particularly beautiful. Alternatively, why not dramatically reduce the cost of
travel and think about taking a holiday here in the UK, which is home to a wide variety of interesting
and enjoyable places perfect for a summer vacation. Wherever you chose to go - be it home or
abroad - remember to travel light. Heavy baggage can weigh down a car thus requiring more petrol if
you're driving, and incur fines or added fees should you be flying.
When choosing holiday
accommodation, think carefully before you book. Many hotels offer discounts and offers if you do a
little research, so you could end up getting a few nights free, or an overall discount. It's also worth
thinking about how you intend to eat whilst away - constantly eating out can be extremely
expensive, so perhaps book a hotel where all meals are included in the price. Alternatively, why not
book a self-catering apartment or holiday cottage where you can prepare your own food at a fraction or restaurant prices? Another
simple way to save money whilst on
holiday is making sure you keep track of your budget. Putting currency into different envelopes
marked for each day is a good trick that will encourage you not to over-spend.
