Dog-friendly Holidays!
Often when you go on holiday
you are forced to leave your favourite companion behind, perhaps in kennels, surrounded by
strangers and wondering where their owner has gone. Dog owners are often heartbroken at the
thought of doing this to their best friend but holidaying with your dog is possible. If you do some
research you can easily find dog friendly accommodation in the U.K. so you can bring your dog with
you to enjoy the vacation. A quick search on the internet will reveal numerous dog friendly hotels,
self catering accommodation, caravans, camp sites, motor homes, pubs, beaches and even dog
friendly days out for you to explore and enjoy throughout the U.K.
An internet search will
bring up many beaches and country walks which are suitable for you and your dog and pinpoints
the stretches where you can let your dog off the lead. They also list some less obvious places
which will accommodate your dog. Perhaps surprisingly there are a number of museums, castles
and abbeys where your dog will be welcome. Lindisfarne Priory at Holy Island welcomes dogs on
leads in certain areas of the Priory, as does Pembroke Castle where all dogs on leads are admitted
into the castle. Glastonbury Abbey allows dogs on leads and even provides two 'dog loos' and
plastic bags where necessary. Hedingham Castle in Essex also permits dogs on leads, provides a
dog tie area in the shade and water bowls are available too.
If you would like to visit a
museum, The Old Mill Riverside Tearooms in the village of Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds will let
you sit on the terrace with your dog. Other examples of dog friendly museums include Crich
Tramway Museum near Matlock in Derbyshire and the Beamish North of England Open Air
Museum, Durham. This is by no means an exhaustive list; there are many more locations
throughout the U.K which will gladly welcome your dog.
When choosing a suitable hotel or
guest house you might want to look out for those which provide access to a vet, dog sitter and dog
groomer. Also make sure they have plenty of outdoor space for your dog. Most places will have
certain rules to be adhered to when bringing your dog such as bringing your own dog bowl, blankets
and cages.
If you are taking your dog on holiday it is important to remember to be as
responsible a dog owner on holiday, as you are at home. Always keep them on a lead in public
places and adhere to the 'poop and scoop' doctrine. Responsible owners are the key to ensuring
the availability of dog friendly hotels, guest houses, pubs and parks. You may prefer to have holiday
closer to nature with your dog by going camping instead. You can be assured your dog will enjoy
the outdoor experience but to make yours a little more comfortable don't forget to look out for the
best Coleman tents to
provide shelter and warmth while camping.
